Used barrel on it's way!
« on: January 12, 2022, 07:53:56 AM »
Well I finally found a replacement 30-30 barrel for my 219 project and hopefully will be installing it this weekend.

Initially I bought a complete 219 through an online auction only to find the mount lug was broken at the ejector hook roll pin area.

It has a Chicopee barrel, and the one I just purchased is a Utica. Will they interchange?

I have taken some photos on the receiver and the barrel it came with originally and I am wondering if they are a matching assembly?

It looks as if they are.

If so I will eventually have the barrel repaired so as to keep it all original.

Here are the photos.

Congratulations on finding a new barrel!  Yes, the damaged barrel does match the receiver.  You can also check under the butt plate and these same or similar letters will be stamped into the wood if the stock has not been shortened.

If your existing action has a striker (only one hole in the frame) then the Utica barrel will be fine, if it fits.  Sometime ago, I purchased a .219 Zipper chambered Utica barrel and had to try it on 4 actions before I found one that would properly fit.  Good luck.

Please keep us posted on your project!

Stock numbers match as well, unfortunatly the tang and scallop area is really cracked up and missing portions.

I do have an aftermarket one for it that I purchased through Numrich, but it will need some wood working to fit properly.

Barrel should be at my door today, hopefully it fits.

Next move will be to decide what finish I want to put on the receiver.

This is turning into a spendy little project ;D

Once you have the new stock fitted, I would recommend glass bedding it, to prevent cracks in the future.  Cracked stocks and hard trigger pulls are a fault in this design.  Please keep us posted.

Well, the Utica barrel didn't fit properly, had a gap between the barrel and receiver. I did send my original barrel out to Micro Precision Welding and had them build up the broken off area on the lug and just got it back last Saturday. Going to be busy hand fitting it now. Not much meat between the extractor pin and hook area.

Thanks for the update.  Will you please post pictures of the repaired area as it appears from the welder, and then again after you complete the fitting?  I think this will be of great interest to our readers.  Good luck on your project.

I got a little anxious and broke out the file and knocked down the excess on the sides and ejector lever slot. I still have to drill out the retaining pin hole for the ejector lever, which is my biggest concern, then work on the hook area for the hinge pin.

Well, it has been a while, but I finally got some time to work on this project. After spending a few hours filing a little and test fitting I finally got the welded-up area shaped to the point that the barrel fits great there is no slop, opens and closes nicely, barrel fits tight to the breech and the ejector works properly. Next step is to take it to the range and test fire it and then on to the refinishing.

Another barrel is saved!  Good luck at the range.
