RBH45's 9mm/.357
« on: March 20, 2015, 06:18:51 AM »
My name is Mike.  I've recently procured a Chicopee Falls 219 in very nice condition.  It's tight and shoots and ejects well (really ejects!!).  I've just ordered Garnett's book and am eager to learn more about this rifle as this little single shot truly fascinates me.  I look forward to learning more from all of you.  I'd sent pictures but unable to do so?  It's a 30/30, by the way, and has an extra mystery 9MM-RF (.357) barrel.
Without further adieu, Here's RBH45's 9mm/357 barrel, nice! Thanks for sharing!  :P

The 9mm barrel was the main reason for my search to begin with.  It's 18 inches and is rifled not off-centered and has no markings save "Selected Forged Steel-Proof Tested 9MM-R.F". .357Mag  I haven't fired the .357 barrel and it is VERY difficult to break open unlike the 30/30.  I'll attach more pics hoping that you might get them.  I'm no wizard with the computer either, very frustrating indeed!!  Plus the barrel locking lug?? is longer on the 9mm 2.606 vs 2.533 inch which probably explains the difficulty of breaking open the rifle.  Hope this helps.  If you have any info it would greatly be appreciated if you would share.  Thanks

Who did you send the barrel to?  I'd like to see pics.  Thanks for posting. 8)

I have not sent the barrel, I suppose I did not make myself clear.  I have purchased a M220 with the 9 mm barrel that has been converted to .357.  I will post pictures of mine after I get it, hopefully Monday.  I think the barrel is going to be identical to yours.  I will be at a gun show this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama and will be looking for a M219 in .32-20 caliber.  That is the only standard caliber I do not have.

I picked up my 9 mm/.357 this morning.  I will post pictures as soon as I can.  Basically, I purchased a barrel and action.  The forearm is hardwood with a late style attaching metal and apparently originally for a shotgun as the barrel groove is way to big for this rifled barrel.  The stock is off a M24 over/under combination gun.  As with the earlier reported barrel by Mike, it is devoid of any proof marks, assembly numbers, etc.  The action is unmarked on the outside, but has a striker rather than a hammer, so I believe it to be from Utica.

My 9 mm bbl. is very easy to open.  The barrel lug on my 9 mm bbl. measures 2.534

I am going to try to show a picture of the rear sight on my 9 mm.  It is made the same way but is very short with no adjustment for elevation.  The dove tail slot is in the same position as Mike's.

After thinking about it a few days, the rear sight on my gun could have been like Mike's and cut short later.  However, a friend who looked at my barrel, said he has seen a similar sight on some older Savage M1899's.

I purchased a Stevens 94c in 16 gauge and the same 357 barrel on arms list.  I test shot barrel fired fine.  I did tons of research and this is what I found.  SAVAGE M24 BARREL-.357 MAG.
This Savage accessory barrel was originally sold by Numrich Arms Corp. of West Hurley, N.Y., which was the predecessor to the present Gun Parts Corp. It is a single auxiliary barrel 18" long, blued with a front sight only. There is a standard dovetail slot cut in the rear of the barrel for installation of a sight.  The rear of the barrel looks like any other single shot break open barrel and it tapers to a thin muzzle diameter. The rear of the barrel is stamped "Selected Forged Steel" "Proof Tested 9MM - R.F. and ".357 MAG". It was lined 357 with ejector.  The barrel is about 45 years old.  It's cool although I am more of a h&r guy.  I can post pics if any wants to see them
Hope this helps
Rick

There is a 9mm/357 barrel on EBay today.  Barrel only, ejector mechanism removed, no rear sight.  $299 starting bid.  I am interested to see what the final cost will be or if it sells at all.

9-12-16  UPDATE!  The barrel did not sell.  It has been relisted at a lower price.  I am really surprised at this.  This is a rare barrel.  Until it appeared for sale, I only knew of 3 others.  I realize it is a project that some may not want to start as you might have a problem finding a receiver that it could be fitted to.  Let's see what happens!
